Church Leadership and Polity

The governing bodies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) are: sessions, presbyteries, synods and the General Assembly.  The session governs a particular congregation. It is made up of elders elected by the congregation, plus the pastor(s).  The session is responsible for all decisions regarding the program and policies of its congregation, except for the two powers reserved for the congregation: the election of officers, including the pastoral staff, and the buying, selling, and/or mortgaging of church property.

"Ruling elders" are so named not because they “lord it over” the congregation (Matt. 20:25), but because they are chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life.

Our Session Members

The Session meets on first Sundays of the month after worship in the Serendipity Room.  Church members are welcome to come and observe our meetings.  If you have a question you would like Session to consider, please contact Rev. Diane or our Clerk of Session so it can be added to our agenda.

Our Ruling Elders are always available to answer questions or receive your feedback about life and ministry at MOPC.
