Lenten Bible Study: Finding Hope through Prayers of Lament
TUESDAYS 10:00 AM AND THURSDAYS 6:30 PM
Turning to scripture as our guide, we will learn about lament and reclaim it as a spiritual practice. We will explore hymns, art and other visual and written examples to discover how lament can move us from suffering to faith; and in our faith, find hope.
There are two identical opportunities to join this study: on Tuesdays from 10:00-11:30 am, starting March 8, OR on Thursdays from 6:30-8:00 pm (with light refreshments) starting March 10.
We will begin by looking at Jesus’ lament from the cross (Psalm 22, Matthew 27:45-56) and both the despair and hope he experienced. We will then look at communal lament using Psalm 137; lamenting death (John 11:28-37); lamenting life (Job 3); and lamenting over our community (Lamentations 3). Finally, we will consider how God laments and grieves. (Hosea 11:1-9, Luke 19:41-44.) This study is part of Rev. Diane’s doctor of ministry final project and your participation will be of great help to her.
